Opening Greeting from the Owners:
Welcome to our 44th Annual Production Sale.
This is the best set of bulls ever produced by this ranch. Well over one-half the
bulls are sired by just three bulls - Sitz Alliance 431N, RR 2418 Hero 0616, and
Sitz Upward 307R. We own all three bulls. Sixty-two percent (62%) of the bulls in
the sale have Birth EPD less than +2.2 pounds (breed average for non-parent bulls).
Over 81% are above +44 Weaning EPD (breed average) and 66% are above +80 Yearling
EPD (breed average). We think this pretty clearly demonstrates that we are
achieving our objective of light birth weight bulls with above breed average
growth.
Driven by a combination of greed in the commodities futures markets and
questionable documentation in the financial sector, the general economy is in the
toilet. No one knows how the deal is going to work out. What we do know is that
those ranches who operate in a businesslike way and continue to do things as right
as they can will survive. Our message is "Don't do anything stupid." You need to
continue to buy the best bulls you can afford and manage your ranch the best way
you know how. There is nothing you can do about the general economy; however, you
can still do the best job of managing your expenses to optimize production on your
outfit.
One of the big topics of conversation this year is "Curley Calf" (Arthrogryposis
Multiplex AM). This is a lethal recessive gene that was just discovered last
calving season. Most of the calves traced back to one herd sire. The scientists
went right to work and identified the gene involved. By November, the American
Angus Association distributed a list of some 63 bulls in AI Studs that were
carriers for this gene. There is now an approved DNA test to identify carrier
animals. The Angus Association developed a program to assess the parentage of all
animals in a herd and identify potential carriers. We have a handful of potential
carriers (usually the identified carrier is 7-8 generations back in the pedigree).
At breeding time we will DNA test each of these animals and cull any that are
carriers. Any potential carriers in this sale have been DNA checked and are free of
the disease. The scientists, the Angus Association, and the Directors of the
Association should be commended for their prompt response to what could have been a
devastating situation.
We look forward to seeing all our old friends at the sale and hope to make a lot of
new ones. We'll again have displays in the sale barn from some of our friends and
suppliers. Plan to be with us sale day and we'll feed you a great lunch. If you get
over our way before the sale, the cattle are available any time. We would love to
talk cattle with you.
