Opening Greeting from Karl Tyler:
Welcome to our 41st Annual Bull Production Sale. We think you will like the bulls we are presenting. They
are the best end of about 400 bulls. This year we fed the bulls at the home ranch in Molly Gulch. They
gained about 3 pounds per day and will be in shape to turn out when you buy them.
Bob Adams had the right idea when he started this program 65 years ago – select for moderation in all traits.
He pretty much stayed in the middle size-wise from the beginning. The fads in the Angus breed didn't have
much effect on his breeding program. We are trying to do the same thing. In the long run, the commercial
cowmen who survive will be the ones who are most labor efficient in their operation. The future of this
business is in cattle that are virtually labor-free, that is why we place so much emphasis on birth weight
and mothering ability.
We need cattle that can make a living on forage. In our deal, they've got to go up on the mountains and
raise a calf, then come back to these native meadow winter pastures. They have got to be able to put on
enough condition in the fall that they can winter on a supplement of alfalfa or slough grass hay. Given the
price of diesel, the less hay, the better. Cattle are simply a tool to turn forage into money. They are not
a "sink" to throw feed supplements at.
We learned from Rodger Swanson that they only way to have a herd of great cows is to cull the devil out of
them. We cull on disposition, teats and udders, and feet and legs, as well as production. If a cow doesn't
work for us, we are not going to perpetuate the problems. When a cow doesn't breed back on time or has poor
production, she goes to town. We can't afford to live with them. You can rest assured that every bull in
this sale is as problem free as we can make him.
Our goal is to raise as big a weaning weights and yearling weights as we can while maintaining moderate cow
size. We weigh and measure every cow when we preg check. We try to breed the bigger frame cows to smaller
frame bulls and vice versa. We ultrasound every bull we feed test to try to keep a handle on carcass traits.
We test the bulls in big pens, just like any other feedlot. We never single out an animal and give him
special treatment just to create "numbers."
We look forward to seeing all our old friends at the sale and hope to make a lot of new ones. We expect to
be in business a long time – our management program is designed to produce long-term cattle. Plan to be with
us sale day and we will feed you a great lunch. If you get over our way before the sale, the cattle are
available any time. We would love to talk cows with you.
