Opening Greeting from Karl Tyler:

Welcome to the 40th Annual Leadore Angus bull sale. I want to thank you on the behalf of myself, Carl Lufkin, and my daughter Kristine for your interest in the first sale of our exciting new venture, KCK Leadore Angus.

I bought my first registered cow from Bob Adams in 1971, but Gary Kendal really created an interest for me in black Angus cattle in1974 while we were officiating high school basketball. Gary helped me buy cows from the Thomas’s in Oregon and the Petersen’s in Washington a few years later. Together with my wife, Donna, we used these registered cows to raise bulls for our first commercial cow herd and sold some of these bulls throughout Montana, Idaho, and South Dakota. We maintained a herd of about 190 cows on our Little 8-Mile Ranch at Leadore, Idaho until 2003.

Carl Lufkin, our ranch manager, became interested in registered cattle a few years ago and we began a search for cattle around the Northwest and Montana that we believe work best for commercial cowmen. Carl has been in the feed lot or cow calf ranching business his entire life and has a genuine interest in producing cows that will calf with no assistance and grow to do well in the feed lot. Together with Carl and Kristine, I am proud to announce the successful formation of KCK Leadore Angus.

History of our Newly Combined Leadore Angus Herd

One of our primary concerns was to produce cattle with consistency to them. In the decades after he established Leadore Angus in the 1970’s, Bob Adams resisted the trend to make Angus cattle big. Bob knows these cattle better than most of us know our own kids’ birthdays, and he focused the program on moderate frame size, calving ease, light birth weight, and above-breed-average growth. Upon purchasing the Leadore Angus herd, Rodger Swanson continued the same program and spent much time focusing on the milk and utters of the cattle. I am sure that you will be very impressed by the superiority of the utters on these cattle compared to those you see around the country.

Along with 80% of the Leadore Angus herd and the entirety of my own Karl and Donna Tyler Angus herd, we also acquired the entire herd of Mark Castor’s Glory B Angus Ranch. With a similar philosophy, Mark bred the Glory B cattle with a focus on the same program as Rod Swanson’s since the 1980’s, making the combined herd very compatible. As part of our deal with Rod, we will continue to develop and market the bulls that he produces with the registered cattle he retained. To our great fortune, Bob Loucks, who has been an unpaid member of the Leadore Angus heard since Bob Adams started, will also be assisting us on our combined herd.

Our Program Philosophy

We believe that as you look at the sale lots in this catalog, you will note that the dam EPDs and pedigrees follow the calf EPDs. These programs have never been based on breeding extremes to reach a result in the middle. Rather, they have always been based on breeding like to like. Over 72% (142) of the bulls in this sale are true calving ease bulls. You can check the birthweights and EPDs of both sire and dam and see that you can breed the bulls to any kind of replacement heifer without getting any surprises. There are a handful of bulls in the sale that have more growth and lack a light birth weight, so remember to look at the animal and the EPDs to ensure that they fit your program.

We do our best to represent the cattle for exactly what they are. If you would like additional information on any individual bull, please ask us at your convenience. We have made every effort to fairly evaluate them against each other for your consideration. The bulls were developed at Legacy Angus’s feedlot at Dillon, Montana. They were fed to gain about 2.5 pounds per day and are absolutely sound. There are not any foundered cattle in the group.

In Closing

We look forward to seeing all our old friends at the sale and hope to make many new ones. Carl, Kristine, and I expect to be in business for a long time because these cattle are designed to work for the long term as well. Thank you for your interest and we look forward to offering you a great lunch on sale day!
